Buying a car in Belize

Caution about buying a car in Belize.

Buying a car in Belize is usually a very straight forward transaction. There are several red flags.

  1. Always write down the VIN yourself. Don’t let the seller give it to you.
  2. Check the VIN on the stolen and damage reports list. Many cars brought into Belize are salvage, so check. You don’t want to buy a car that was flood damaged.
  3. Take a copy of the VIN, a description of the car to the Police or Transportation Department. They can verify that all is ok with you buying the car.
  4. Check with customs and have them look up the VIN, to make sure the duties are all paid. People coming into the country on QRP don’t pay duty on the vehicle. If you buy it, you will get a shock when you go to get plates.
